How to prepare for Obstetrics and Gynecology for NEET PG 2022: Simplified
The preparation strategy topic-wise of obstetrics and gynaecology are as follows:
Gynaecology:
Gynaecology Oncology
One of the most important topics of the subject is gynaecology oncology. This topic must be revised one day before the exam as it can be tough to remember all of these. The essential subtopics include Ca ovary, ca, Ca cervix and Ca Endometrium. All these three topics are consequential because of NEET PG. Students are also advised not to cram the topics but to understand the concepts effectively.
Students can follow a systematic approach to learning. For example, you can start with the pelvic node, its stages and connect with the Ca Cervix, Ca Ovary and Ca Endometrium. If Inguinal mode is concerned, what are Ca Cervix, Ca Ovary, and ca Endometrium’s. Students are also required to prepare for the prognostic factors and effects of Gynecology cancers. One question invariably can come related to gynaecology cancers.
Primary Amenorrhea
It is another essential topic in Primary Amenorrhea. Students are required to emphasize the simple approach of Primary Amenorrhea with a patient and delayed puberty. The other essential sub-topic of Primary Amenorrhea includes Turner’s syndrome. You can also learn the difference between Mullerian agenesis, turner’s syndrome, and insensitivity syndrome.
Case scenarios, treatments, methods are also a must-read. Case studies include how to treat a patient with Primary Amenorrhea, approach a patient if she has Primary Amenorrhea, the different ways to approach the patient, etc. These topics are sufficient to answer the multiple-choice questions related to the topic.
PCOS
PCOS is one of the most common problems in girls, and this topic cannot be ignored. It is considered a central part of the subject. You can find one or two short questions on the topic, such as Pathophysiology of PCOS, how you treat it, different methods to treat it, lab findings, etc.
Other topics
Other topics to study are Kallman syndromes, intersex, MRKH, CAH, treatment of CAH, lesions, steps for the Laparotomy, Drugs (Endometrial Ablation and Read Mirena), Dermoid, etc.
Obstetrics
Operative Obstetrics
Candidates can expect questions on Ventouse and forceps. Which instrument should be used for operations, forceps or ventouse?
Pregnancy-induced HTN (PIH)
Pregnancy-induced HTN is an important concept for NEET PG . The guidelines of this topic were changed in 2013. So, candidates can start by learning the new guidelines of the topic PIH and its definition. Definition of preeclampsia also is essential. Study all the changes and new topic additions in PIH.
Study the different types of drugs and pills used to keep the mother and baby safe during pregnancy and the drugs which are not safe and shouldn’t be taken at the time of pregnancy. It can become difficult to remember all the different categories of drugs. So, you can simply study the drug category X as many questions were there in the previous papers of NEET PG.
Reproductive Physiology
You can study the topics and questions that frequently occurred in the previous question papers, such as when TPR peaks and when the cardiac output of a person is at peaks, what are the reasons and how can you stabilize it.
Cesarean Section
The section talks about the birth of a baby through C-section. Candidates must know the process, steps about when it is contraindicated and when it is indicated. Students can expect these types of questions.
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM)
GDM is a recent topic that was amended. So, students must pay special attention to the new amendments. Every year one question always comes up related to the topic. So, students must prepare the topic as a whole.
Antepartum and Intrapartum
You can find a couple of questions on Antepartum and Intrapartum topics. Study the details of CTG and NST, biophysical profile, patterns of CTG during labour, different dynamics of amniotic fluid, a common type of CTG, doppler of the uterine artery, MCA velocity, assessment of the anaemia, ductus venosus ‘M’ wave, etc.
Other topics
Other important topics of Obstetrics include Abortions, H mole and Ectopic pregnancy. These topics are vital and must be given prominence too. Students must study all these three topics in detail to grasp the complexities and different approaches to the situation.
Some of the basic questions that can be asked for this topic in the question paper are:
- What will you do if a patient is injured and comes to the hospital with a ruptured ectopic?
- What will you do in case of recurrent abortions?
- What approach will you use in case of recurrent abortions?
- What investigation will you make for a patient who has been to recurrent abortions?
- What will be the probable diagnosis of the situation?
These types of questions can be asked in the question paper of the NEET PG.
