NATIONAL MEDICAL UPDATES

Advancements

  • The AIIMS-Bhubaneswar has received funding from the ICMR to establish a satellite brain bank bank in the department of pathology and lab medicine, a “first of its kind” in the eastern region that will boost research in neurosciences. A brain bank is a repository of brain samples of deceased persons, which finds use in research work.

New disease outbreak

  • Amid Covid pandemic, after Mizoram witnessed the ASF outbreak, now cases have been reported in Tripura where a large number of pigs have died in a government farm in Kanchanpur.

Research

  • A team of scientists have developed a “thermostable” variety of insulin, which eliminates the need to keep it refrigerated. It will be a huge relief for issues like portability being the biggest hurdle for insulin-dependent diabetics. The research has been led by two scientists of the Bose Institute and the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB) here and two others from the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad.

Food fortification : Agriculture ministry

  • Rice having excess zinc and wheat enriched with protein and iron, are among 17 new biofortified varieties of crops that have been developed and released for cultivation. These new varieties seek to reduce malnutrition as they are a source of staple diet rich in micronutrients.

NEWER DRUGS

  • Drug  company Abbott announced room-temperature-stable, single-dose formulation of carbetocin in India to help in the prevention of postpartum haemorrhage (PPH).

NEW GUIDELINES

  • WHO issues updated guidance on TB management in children and adolescents. Key recommendations:
  • Use of Xpert MTB/ RIF Ultra in gastric aspirate or stool specimens as the initial diagnostic test for TB.
  • Detection of rifampicin resistance in children aged below 10 years with signs and symptoms of pulmonary TB.
  • 4-month treatment regimen (2HRZ(E)/2HR) rather than the standard 6-month regimen (2HRZ(E)/4HR) in children and adolescents under 16 years of age with non-severe, presumed drug-susceptible TB.
  • In children with MDR/ RR-TB of all ages: Use bedaquiline as part of the shorter, all oral bedaquiline-containing regimen (conditionally recommended by WHO in 2020) or as part of longer treatment regimens.
  • A recommendation to use delamanid as part of longer treatment regimens. (These recommendations make it possible to design all-oral regimens for children of all ages).
  • Use of a shorter intensive regimen composed of 6 months of isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide and ethionamide in children and adolescents with microbiologically confirmed or clinically diagnosed TB meningitis, presumed to be drug susceptible, as an alternative to the currently recommended12 month regimen.
