FMGE Exam Pattern and Syllabus- Frequently Asked Questions

What is FMGE?

Answer – Foreign Medical Graduate Screening Exam or FMG, is a test conducted by the government of India for qualification for getting admission to medical colleges in India. Foreign medical graduates are required to clear this test. It tests the overall understanding of the student with regard to human body systems, diseases, medical terms, tests, treatments, etc., with a focus on medical knowledge in English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Logical reasoning.

 What is the FMGE syllabus?

The questions are chosen from the major body systems, including neurology, psychiatry, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, infectious diseases, anesthesiology, medical genetics, cardiology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, urology, hematology, oncology, orthopedics, rheumatology, dermatology, plastic surgery, surgical subspecialties and general surgery.

What is the FMGE eligibility?

Answer- Foreign Medical Graduate Screening Exam is given to examine the knowledge of Foreign Medical Graduates to practice medicine in India. This exam is conducted to assess the general practice knowledge of foreign medical doctors. This exam is taken by the candidates who have completed the undergraduate medical education and have also passed the licensing examination to practise medicine abroad.

For which colleges the FMGE is mandatory?

Answer- The Foreign Medical Graduate Screening Exam is mandatory for all the medical colleges in India. There will be a group discussion and personal interview conducted for the candidates along with the FMGSE. The candidates who will qualify for the FMGSE might be shortlisted for counselling. Then, they will be selected in a medical college for an MBBS degree in India.

Who conducts the FMGE exam in India?

Answer- The Foreign Medical Graduate Screening Exam (FMGE) is conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE). It is conducted for candidates who have qualified for the All India examination National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) but do not satisfy the language requirement. TOEFL, IELTS or equivalent test results are acceptable.

Is the Foreign Medical Graduate Screening Exam in India considered tough?

Answer- It depends on who takes the test and how they approach the same. The screening exam is designed to test your knowledge and your ability to solve basic clinical problems. It is not meant to test you on all the medical knowledge that ‘all’ doctors should have. You can read the question and answers and sample papers before taking the test. Take a sample screening exam before the actual test to become familiar with what you need to know and what to expect on the day of the test. The screening exam is not meant to scare you, but to give you a chance to familiarize yourself with the paper and its format.
