Strategy for FMGE 2021

If you are an Indian citizen doing their MBBS from outside India or who has already graduated, you are not alien to the term FMGE. This FMGE or Foreign Medical Graduates Examination or Medical Council of India Screening Test is conducted by the NBE (the National Board of Examination). It is a licensure examination for those candidates who want to practice medicine in India. This Examination is also one of the mandatory requirements for an Indian citizen who has a medical degree from a foreign country to attempt the most extensive PG entrance exam in the country, NEET PG. The screening/ licensing test for foreign medical graduates is conducted bi-annually in June and December.

The pressure to clear the FMGE is immense due to multiple reasons; you get only three shots at it, the passing rate of the exam is meagre, it is a do or die situation because it is for your medical practice license, you need to prove the everyone that you have studied very well in the last 4 – 4.5 years, and also because it is one of the strictest licensing exams in the world.

The December session of the FMGE is about six months away from now. If you have decided to read this article, the assumption is that you are planning to appear in that exam and are riddled with a few pinching questions right now like,” Are six months enough to crack the exam?”, “How should I prepare for the exam?”, ”Am I good enough to crack FMGE?” and so on. This article intends to smash all the doubts you have and tell you that you are good enough; 6 months is ideal preparation time and provide you with a plan to do it.

Go through the syllabus and exam pattern

Before you start devising a preparation plan, you need to know the exact extent of the syllabus you need to cover and the scope of the subjects in it. Not just that, you must also see the pattern of the exam. So, start by going to the official website and reading all the information regarding FMGE. Now, you can segregate subjects in the descending order of importance and distribute your time accordingly, spare time to more marks and lesser time to fewer marks.

Have a study plan

You need to create a study plan and follow it religiously, no two ways about it. One good way is to divide your time into two parts—The first four months for reading everything and the next two for constant multiple revisions. Along with having a monthly plan, it is essential to have a daily timetable as well. A sample timetable will look something like this:

  • 5 AM – Wake-up
  • By 5:30AM – start studying.
  • 9 AM to 10:30 AM – Morning chores and breakfast
  • By 11 AM – Back to books.
  • 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM – Lunch break
  • 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM – take a nap.
  • By 3:30 PM – back to books.
  • 6.30 PM to 7.30 PM – social media and exercise
  • 7.30 PM to 8.30 PM – Dinner break
  • 9 PM to 12 AM – Study
  • Sleep at 12 AM

Review everything at least twice

Revising the basics and keeping them clean is vital. The review is indispensable and must be done at regular intervals. Going through the topics over and over will train your brain to retain the information. Whether it is your first attempt or second attempt, repeatedly revise the main topics once or twice. Design your plan in such a way that you have enough time to complete at least two rounds of exams.

Give online tests

Trying out MCQs and mock tests can dictate your final score. Make sure to try a variety of multiple questions on different topics. This is a great way to refine your weakest areas. You will meet many students who say that they could not finish the work on time and left about 20-40 MCQs without trying. The main reason is they continue to study and revise the curriculum but ignore the practice of the FMGE mock tests. There is no negative marking, so you cannot afford to leave questions unanswered in the exam.

It is crucial to remember that all the preparation plans, online and offline resources, and tips and tricks will not work if you do not. There is no replacement for good old-fashioned hard work to just being consistent, relentless, and stubborn towards achieving your goals. Nothing new happens on the day of the exam; it is nothing but the presentation of everything you have done to get to that stage; the real work is done behind the scenes. So, tighten your belt and wake up every day with your final motive in mind. I hope you succeed in earning your license – best of luck.
